A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
