An defence official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret matters in any cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in China-made cars.

He stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that safety is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Defence Context

This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
