Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
