One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
