Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
