Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
