Working Life of Income Insufficient for UK Labor Force to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Report Says

According to new study, the median earner in the UK would require over five decades of income to attain the wealth level of the richest 10% in the country.

Growing Financial Divide Over Time

The analysis examined net worth statistics including the Covid pandemic period and discovered that during the mid-2000s, it would have required 38 years of median full-time earnings to enter the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

An economic expert associated with the study stated: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would remain unable to attain the highest level of the wealth ladder."

Measuring the Wealth Divide

The study revealed that the difference between the assets of the median citizen and someone in the wealthiest decile was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had increased to 1.3 million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms by recent times.

The economist further stated: "These differences are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is limited – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Despite the financial disparity growing in absolute terms, the portion of complete net worth in the UK held by the most affluent homes – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the eighties," according to the analysis.

Throughout these years, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Factors of Economic Disparity

Termed "automatic" increases, through rising house prices and adjustments to superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, per the study.

These increases tended to accrue to older, property-owning households, the study demonstrates – exacerbating the intergenerational wealth divide.

Generational Wealth Disparities

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s grew by more than 100% in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135k in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Differences

There were also significant area-based disparities, with the typical amount of net worth in recent years standing at 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

COVID Era Consequences

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were protected by the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the information reveals countless homes were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.

More affluent homes fared much better, nevertheless. "The average household in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the 24 months before COVID. In contrast, the typical family in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
